Flexible seating, also referred to as alternative seating, is a research-based approach to classroom seating options for students. Flexible seating in the classroom allows students with choice over where and how they sit. The research behind this alternative student seating approach claims that students are more engaged, motivated, and obtain higher achievement when they are offered choice in the classroom.
In my classroom this year, I will be implementing flexible seating for students. Students will have the option of sitting on stability balls, stools, pillows, etc. Students will be explicitly taught how to choose a seating option that will allow them to learn best in the classroom.
I am very excited to implement this in my classroom this school year, and I hope you are as well! I have included some links to a few articles that discusses flexible seating more in-depth. If you have any questions or concerns regarding flexible seating, please feel free to contact me.
